Mechanical engineering – Southampton and Cambridge (PhD)

I was attracted to a consultancy because my PhD was much broader than mechanical engineering alone. I didn’t want to go down a focused route and be pigeon-holed into a technical role. TTP doesn’t have boxes – either boxes for people, or boxes to tick.

I also wanted to work in a broad range of areas and throughout the project cycle – theory, practice and client interaction – and I’ve not been disappointed.

I’ll often work on a variety of projects at any one time, involving technologies including novel actuators, novel mechanisms and micro fluidics. Projects range from troubleshooting specific components, right through to full system design, covering concept generation, theoretical analysis, device design and practical implementation. Not only is the work itself broad, it’s also diverse – from white goods manufacture to power tools; consumer products to pharmaceuticals.

TTP is a bold company and it’s willing to take risks. Some of the things we do tend to be quite risky technologically and it’s good to take that on, without necessarily knowing what the outcome is going to be.
